Fostering collaboration and innovation

Some of the biggest scientific breakthroughs and best medical treatments and therapies come from sharing resources and knowledge across disciplines. To that end, University of Chicago Biological Sciences Division supports a number of interdisciplinary institutes and centers, including our University of Chicago Comprehensive Cancer Center. Each is unique, bringing together a diverse group of faculty, students, and staff to address an important topic through research and educational activities.  

Institutes

The Bucksbaum Institute for Clinical Excellence aims to enhance the skills of physicians as advisers, counselors, and navigators to help patients make informed decisions when facing complex treatment choices.

The Duchossois Family Institute (DFI) at the University of Chicago Medicine promotes wellness through groundbreaking science on the immune system, genetics, the microbiome, and their shared environments.

The University of Chicago has established the Institute for Biophysical Dynamics to meet the challenges of achieving a molecular-level understanding of the structure, diversity and function of biological entities. The Institute represents new approach to scientific research at the interface between biology and the physical sciences, bringing together experimentalists, theoreticians, and computational scientists to forge a scientific culture of fluid exchange of ideas and collaboration across disciplines and among laboratories.

The IGSB is a multidisciplinary home for computational and wet-laboratory groups. While Divisional support of the institute has ended, the faculty still collaborate and are still housed on the 10th floor of KCBD.

The main missions of IIP are to provide intellectual home for faculty members interested in various areas of Physiology to foster interactive research programs and oversee physiology education to medical, graduate and undergraduate students.

The Institute for Population and Precision Health brings together researchers from multiple academic units across University of Chicago, and provides them with population-based resources to tackle the most challenging biological, behavioral, and economic problems in preventive and population medicine. The University’s excellence across these disciplines provides an interdisciplinary Institute that has the capacity to focus its collective expertise on population and precision health research.

The Institute for Translational Medicine (ITM) helps you live your best life by making research breakthroughs happen and getting those discoveries into the real world to improve your health as soon as possible.

The University of Chicago Neuroscience Institute is the intellectual home for a diverse group of scholars and scientists working together to advance our understanding of the brain. By utilizing a multidisciplinary approach, the Institute includes faculty members from such areas as Chemistry, Cognitive Sciences, Computer Science, Genetics, Molecular Biology, Statistics and many more to reveal how the human brain and our social and physical environments interact.

Advancing Health Equity Center is identifying practical steps to help everyone have a fair and just opportunity to be as healthy as possible.

The Asthma and COPD Center combines research, education and conducts clinical trials and other types of studies to investigate improved therapies and procedures for the treatment of asthma and COPD.

Our Cardiovascular Imaging Center is a national leader in 3D echocardiography, and our physicians pioneered many 3D techniques. As a result, we often have access to the most advanced equipment and the latest software before other centers.

The Center for Asian Health Equity (CAHE) provides a central location for the comprehensive evaluation of the health issues and diverse healthcare needs of Asian American communities in the Chicago metropolitan area.

The Center for Chronic Disease Research and Policy aims to influence healthcare policies by studying innovations in the natural history of chronic diseases and their treatments.

The mission of the Center for Global Health is to collaborate with communities locally and globally to democratize education, increase service learning opportunities, and advance novel, transdisciplinary, and sustainable solutions to improve health and well-being while reducing global health disparities and inequities.

For more than 75 years, The University of Chicago has been a leader in research and training at the intersection of health and the social sciences. The Center for Health and the Social Sciences, founded in 2005, continues this legacy through our support of interdisciplinary health research and training initiatives on campus.

Our Center for Interventional Endoscopy (CERT) program attracts patients from around the country due to our expertise, innovation, patient focus and strong partnerships.

The Center for Liver Diseases at the University of Chicago Medicine offers leading-edge approaches for diagnosing and treating the full range of chronic and acute liver diseases in adults.

The Center for Personalized Therapeutics has initiated one of the most important and potentially impactful advances that could occur in medical care today - the routine implementation of genomic knowledge to individualize therapy.

The University of Chicago is launching the Center for Physics of Evolving Systems to study the secrets behind the extraordinary efficiency, flexibility and robustness of biological systems designed via evolution. The new center will span the Division of the Biological Sciences and the Institute for Molecular Engineering, bringing together faculty across biology, physics and engineering, and potentially the humanities.

The SET Center fosters multidisciplinary scholarship and team science focused on early childhood development, in order to improve outcomes and optimize health across the life course for our most vulnerable patients.

Center for Translational Data Science uses data driven research approaches require interdisciplinary innovation in computing technology, algorithms, and statistical models. The growing volume of data available necessitates advances in the sophistication of these methods. Our work centers around developing instruments to integrate commons of complex data with cloud computing technology.

Chicago Center for HIV Elimination (CCHE) seeks to eliminate new HIV transmission events over the next 30 years (from 2011 to 2041) by using network science to target and integrate prevention as well as create structural and community-specific intervention.

Diabetes and endocrinology research has long been a major focus of investigation within the Division of the Biological Sciences of The University of Chicago. The University of Chicago Diabetes Research and Training Center promotes multidisciplinary research in diabetes.

Since its founding in 1990, the Digestive Disease Research Core Center at the University of Chicago has stood at the forefront of medical research. Today, we have a research base of over 50 members. Our five cores are each led by top investigators, committed not only to the highest level of innovation in their own fields, but to sharing their research with colleagues in other cores. This integrated, multidisciplinary approach is evident in that 30% to 40% of publications made possible through the DDRCC each year are the result of collaborations.

The Grossman Center for Quantitative Biology and Human Behavior develops and expands cutting-edge quantitative methods poised to probe the nervous system and foster deep collaborations with experimental groups to test emerging theories of the brain. The Center will houses a team of world-class computational scientists that act as a nexus for the quantitative thought about the brain spanning the divisions and departments across the University of Chicago.

The research program in the Gwen Knapp Center for Lupus and Immunology Research takes a multidisciplinary approach to studying autoimmunity and successfully coordinates basic science with translational and clinical research. This set-up is the foundation for increasing the speed at which basic laboratory research is translated into clinical practices that directly benefit people.

The Heart and Vascular Center team includes expert specialists and researchers focused on diagnosing, preventing and treating the following heart and vascular conditions.

The Inflammatory Bowel Disease Center builds on UChicago Medicine's long history of excellence in research that advances the science and understanding of inflammatory bowel disease. Our world-renowned specialists not only continue to push boundaries with their leading-edge research but also integrate the latest therapies into their treatment plans to offer you the most advanced care available.

Founded in 1969 by Dr. Fredric L. Coe, the University of Chicago Kidney Stone Evaluation and Treatment Program has provided care for over 5,000 patients, many of whom have remained under treatment and stone free for decades.

The Microbiome Medicine Program (MMP) provides a front door to UChicago faculty studying the microbiome in the context of human health – particularly in all sections of the Department of Medicine.

The Sleep Disorders Center specializes in the assessment of respiratory and non-respiratory sleep disorders in adults and children.

For decades, the University of Chicago Sleep Research Center has been nationally and internationally recognized as a leading institution for sleep research. Investigators here have been responsible for the discovery of REM sleep (Kleitman and Aserinsky, 1953), the definition of sleep stages used in clinical practice worldwide (Rechtschaffen and Kales, 1968), and the demonstration that total sleep deprivation has deadly consequences (Everson, Bergman and Rechstaffen, 1989).
