About

Dean's Welcome

The Biological Sciences Division encompasses a wide range of fields of inquiry spanning the basic biological sciences and clinical disciplines, from the deciphering the very essence of life to treating the most complex diseases. UChicago scientists and clinicians challenge ideas and push boundaries through rigorous inquiry and experimentation, defining fields and deepening knowledge that confronts the most important challenges of our time.

We provide a full spectrum of education—collegiate, graduate, medical, and postgraduate—characterized by a passionate commitment to scholarship and interdisciplinary collaboration. As new technologies enable more discoveries and give rise to entirely new fields of research, UChicago will shape the next era of science and medicine by pursuing ideas that transcend traditional academic boundaries.

The University of Chicago Medicine is also committed to improving health and wellness in our local communities. Through valued partnerships, we leverage the strengths and talents of existing community assets to strategically address chronic conditions and other complex health needs on Chicago's historic South Side and in our Southland region. As part of our commitment to advance health equity, we invested $607 million in benefits and services to the community in fiscal 2021, including programs through the Urban Health Initiative, the South Side Healthy Community Organization, and an expanding network of clinics and outpatient facilities throughout the city and suburbs.

Our faculty is among the very finest in the nation, and we have several academic and research programs ranked nationally in US News & World Report’s graduate program ratings, including:

  • Biological Sciences Graduate Programs -- #11 overall
  • Paleontology -- #2
  • Ecology & Evolution -- #10
  • Cell Biology -- #18

BSD faculty and alumni have been recognized for their distinguished work through numerous awards and honorific societies, including elected membership in the National Academy of Sciences, the National Academy of Medicine, the American Academy of Arts & Sciences, and the National Medal of Science.

Fostering an academic environment rooted in interdisciplinary collaboration attracts ambitious, entrepreneurial scholars who push the limits of science and medicine to translate discoveries into practical applications for society. Leveraging the broader institutional strengths of the University of Chicago and University of Chicago Medicine, we are committed to the highest level of research, education, and patient care. We encourage you to explore this site and learn how to become a part of the work that we’re doing.
