Dr. Ameera Haamid is an Assistant Professor of Emergency Medicine at the University of Chicago Medicine who also serves as the Associate Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Medical Director of the Chicago South EMS System (Region 11), which provides medical oversight for multiple EMS agencies. She is core faculty for the University of Chicago EM Residency Program and previously served as the Assistant EMS Fellowship Director for the University of Chicago EMS fellowship ( the only EMS fellowship in the state of Illinois). She currently serves as a member of the Emergency Cardiovascular Care Science Subcommittee of the American Heart Association (AHA) and is an author of the 2025 AHA Comprehensive Guidelines for CPR and Emergency Cardiovascular Care.
She develops education and initiatives concerning health equity & improved clinical care for medical professionals. Her EMS-related interests include EMS operations, event medicine, prehospital research, and the intersection of health equity and EMS.
Dr. Haamid is the prior national co-chair of the National Association of EMS Physicians (NAEMSP) Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Committee. She co-developed and instructs the "Unconscious Bias for Fire and EMS" course for the Chicago Fire Department - one of the only programs of it's kind nationally. In addition, she co-directs a national annual 8-hour course titled "Empowering Leadership: Building Excellence and Equity into EMS systems". Her research has been published in Prehospital Emergency Care, Annals of Emergency Medicine, and Circulation.
Dr. Haamid's field experience includes working as an EMS physician at several major events, including the Bank of America Chicago Marathon, NASCAR Chicago Street Race, 2024 Democratic National Convention, and United States Sail Grand Prix.
She graduated summa cum laude with a BA in chemistry from Jackson State University and earned an MD from the University of Illinois Chicago. She completed a residency in emergency medicine at John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital of Cook County in Chicago and an EMS Fellowship at Denver Health and Hospital Authority.
