A distinctive lecture in biology, medicine, and society

The George and Marie Andros Lectureship was established by George Andros, M.D. ’60, and Marie Andros, in January of 1989 to provide a unique forum for the exchange of perspectives at the intersection of biology, medicine, and society that bridges the past, present, and future. Lectures are highly topical and have featured speakers from a broad range of subject areas.  

The Andros lectureship takes place annually on the University of Chicago's Hyde Park campus.

About Dr. George Andros

A 1960 graduate of the University of Chicago School of Medicine, George Andros, M.D., and his wife Marie, established the George and Marie Andros Lectureship in January of 1989.

George Andros was born in Lincoln, Nebraska, and completed his undergraduate education at the University of Illinois. After obtaining his medical degree, he interned at the Los Angeles County General Hospital and returned to the University of Chicago as a research assistant in 1961. In 1962, Dr. Andros accepted a position as research associate at the National Institutes of Health and the National Cancer Institute Laboratory of Physiology in Bethesda, Maryland. He was a surgical resident at Massachusetts General Hospital from 1964 until 1969, with a one-year break during which he served as a senior registrar at the Western Infirmary in Glasgow, Scotland. Dr. Andros was certified by the American Board of Surgery in 1971 and earned a special certification in vascular surgery in 1983.

One of the most respected vascular surgeons in Los Angeles, Dr. Andros is medical director of the Amputation Prevention Center at Valley Presbyterian Hospital in Van Nuys, California, and founding partner of Los Angeles Vascular Specialists. Dr. Andros is also Co-Founder and Chair Emeritus of the annual Diabetic Foot Conference, an international symposium. Dr. Andros has written numerous articles related to the field of vascular surgery and has contributed to nearly a dozen books on the subject. Additionally, he co-authored Atlas of Duplex Ultrasonography: Essential Images of the Vascular System. Dr. Andros has received numerous awards, including most recently, the Honorary Fellowship from the Greek Society of Vascular Surgery (2004). He also serves on the Los Angeles City Planning Commission.
