His research program, continuously funded by the NIH for more than two decades, spans discovery through translational investigation, with a focus on improving outcomes for patients.

Since joining UChicago in 2019, Mirmira has been instrumental in advancing research and training missions. He serves as Director of the Diabetes Research and Training Center and Vice Chair for Research in the Department of Medicine. He previously served as Director of the Translational Research Center and as Vice Chair for Translational Research. He also leads a T32 training program in integrated clinical and basic endocrinology research, reflecting his commitment to developing physician-scientists. His contributions to mentorship and scientific leadership have also been widely recognized. He is the recipient of the Albert Renold Award from the American Diabetes Association and has been elected to both the American Society for Clinical Investigation and the Association of American Physicians.
